Through this course, you will learn about the theories and principles of teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language. These principles and theories will be explored, analyzed and discussed to prepare trainees for quality lesson planning and teaching practices.

In this course you will learn:

Theoes of language, learning, and teaching
Practical considerations on Second Language Teaching
Teaching in practice

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

identify old and current approaches in second language pedagogy
understand and apply theories on teaching language skills
plan and teach lessons based on principles of second language pedagogy

Divided into three main modules, this foundation level course is scheduled as follows:

Module 1: Foundations: Language, Learning, and Teaching

Week 1: Introduction to Components of Language
Week 2: Foundations of Language Learning
Week 3: History of Language Teaching
Week 4: Communicative Language Teaching
Week 5: Principles of Language Teaching

Module 2: Developing: Second Language Teaching

Week 6: Contexts of Second Language Teaching
Week 7: Teaching Sub-skills: Grammar, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation
Week 8: Teaching Receptive Skills: Listening and Reading
Week 9: Teaching Productive Skills: Speaking and Writing
Week 10: Lesson Planning

Module 3: Practice: Teaching Practicum

Week 11: Classroom Observation
Week 12: Classroom Teaching

The course will begin on the first Monday of May 2020 and spans until the last week of July 2020. Throughout the course, you will be able to learn at your own pace, at your convenience to suit your schedule. Participants will have four weeks to complete the course. However, they can access the program content for a period of five weeks. Two weeks ahead of the course, a free-of-charge compulsory orientation program (Week Zero) will be offered to enhance your online learning skills.

TESOL Core: Foundations – Developing is designed for those who aspire to become a quality English language teacher in teaching young and adult learners. The course is in alignment with the requirements of TESL Canada Professional Certification Standard One/Two, which provides the potential for graduates to apply for this internationally reliable certificate. Certified teachers would be eligible candidates to apply for teaching opportunities all around the world, especially in Canada.

Each module offers a variety of interactive tasks including video clips, readings, discussions, projects, and quizzes. You must score 70% or higher on each module’s quiz to qualify for the next module. Once you have successfully completed the the course, you will receive a certificate of completion detailing your hours of professional development during the program.
